Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, 40 years have elapsed since 1981 — a year that brought us some of the most iconic pop, rock and R&B songs ever.

While we here at the Fresh Faces Frightening Fun Facts podcast tend to focus on cinematic sojourns of yesterday and today, for this installment we’ve instead turned our attention to the airwaves of four decades ago — and needless to say, ‘81 had no shortage of bangers (as the kids say today) across the musical genre spectrum.

From industrial-goth to double-entendre-laden funk to singer-songwriter schmaltz to immortal arena rock anthems, there was a little something to please everybody when it comes to the biggest and baddest hits of ‘81. And, naturally, Jazzy James and Kit-Kat Kristen have no shortage of nostalgic musings and tantalizing trivia to complement those rockin’ tunes from the Reagan years.

Join the totally tubular twosome for a radical retrospective, where such bodacious topics and musings as the following are broached:

— Just how did the ultra-depressing theme song from an ultra-depressing movie like Arthur become a top radio hit in the first place?

— What makes the early work of The Cure so eerily enthralling and enchanting?

— Is there a darker, more sinister meaning behind what is arguably Phil Collins’ most beloved song?

— Scientifically, is it even possible to tell The Go-Gos and The Bangles apart?

— What long-abandoned intro hook employed by songs like Red Rider’s “Lunatic Fringe” are SORELY missing in modern day rock music (and DEFINITELY needs to be brought back?)

— Is Rick James a prototype for Prince, or vice-versa?

— Just how many GREAT old-school rock and roll staples are included on the soundtrack to 2010’s Let Me In?

— What does Sprite and Pac-Man have to do with Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes?”

— And, perhaps most important, what all-time rock and roll classic released on Halloween 1981 does both Jazzy James and Kit-Kat Kristen agree is the undisputed king of karaoke night?

Make sure that side ponytail is on tight and you’ve got your most dapper fishnet tank top on hand — this is one blast from the past you’ll DEFINITELY want to crank at full volume on your Walkman, dudes and dudettes!
