Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, 40 years have elapsed since 1981 ā€” a year that brought us some of the most iconic pop, rock and R&B songs ever.

While we here at the Fresh Faces Frightening Fun Facts podcast tend to focus on cinematic sojourns of yesterday and today, for this installment weā€™ve instead turned our attention to the airwaves of four decades ago ā€” and needless to say, ā€˜81 had no shortage of bangers (as the kids say today) across the musical genre spectrum.

From industrial-goth to double-entendre-laden funk to singer-songwriter schmaltz to immortal arena rock anthems, there was a little something to please everybody when it comes to the biggest and baddest hits of ā€˜81. And, naturally, Jazzy James and Kit-Kat Kristen have no shortage of nostalgic musings and tantalizing trivia to complement those rockinā€™ tunes from the Reagan years.

Join the totally tubular twosome for a radical retrospective, where such bodacious topics and musings as the following are broached:

ā€” Just how did the ultra-depressing theme song from an ultra-depressing movie like Arthur become a top radio hit in the first place?

ā€” What makes the early work of The Cure so eerily enthralling and enchanting?

ā€” Is there a darker, more sinister meaning behind what is arguably Phil Collinsā€™ most beloved song?

ā€” Scientifically, is it even possible to tell The Go-Gos and The Bangles apart?

ā€” What long-abandoned intro hook employed by songs like Red Riderā€™s ā€œLunatic Fringeā€ are SORELY missing in modern day rock music (and DEFINITELY needs to be brought back?)

ā€” Is Rick James a prototype for Prince, or vice-versa?

ā€” Just how many GREAT old-school rock and roll staples are included on the soundtrack to 2010ā€™s Let Me In?

ā€” What does Sprite and Pac-Man have to do with Kim Carnesā€™ ā€œBette Davis Eyes?ā€

ā€” And, perhaps most important, what all-time rock and roll classic released on Halloween 1981 does both Jazzy James and Kit-Kat Kristen agree is the undisputed king of karaoke night?

Make sure that side ponytail is on tight and youā€™ve got your most dapper fishnet tank top on hand ā€” this is one blast from the past youā€™ll DEFINITELY want to crank at full volume on your Walkman, dudes and dudettes!
